Greetings all,
First time here, have owned my Everest since late 2016 (2017model) and love it. I used it to tow our caravan around the country for over 18,000km with no problems over a year ago. That was until last week.
My problems relate to driving whilst towing our caravan recently. The caravan is weighs approximately 2,250kg and the car was not loaded heavily. I was well below the maximum towing weight, ball weight, GVM and GCM.
Whist driving, after about 4 hours we noticed that the ambient temperature on the screen display started to go up quite dramatically from what would have been the normal outside temperature. Whilst it was quite a hot day, the screen display continued to increase and displayed a temperature of 65 degrees at its peak. The temperature gauge for the engine did not raise at all above its normal operating level. At this time the vehicle had a dramatic loss of power. I could not increase speed and the vehicle was non responsive and would only travel at about 60 km per hour regardless of accelerator input. There was no warnings or alerts on the dashboard. I believe the vehicle went into 'Limp Mode.’ The problem was especially bad when the vehicle was on an incline and if it was a hill - the car slowed to a crawl of below 40km/h.
After a stop for the night, the same thing happened again after a few hours driving in outback South Australia. Increase in the ambient temperature reading on the main screen followed by dramatic loss of power, speed and ‘Limp Mode’. I immediately called my dealership service department for advice - but was only given the option of booking the car in for checking and maybe getting Roadside assistance.
On both these occasions I was in outback locations on major roads where the posted speed limit was 110km/h. It was a dangerous situation to have large trucks bearing down on us forcing them to brake heavily as our vehicle was unable to travel any more than 40 - 60km/h whilst looking for appropriate places to get off.
The car was stopped for a week apart from a couple of small non-towing trips. After that time as we were arriving at our destination after about 6 hours driving, the temperature started to increase again and reached 65 degrees - this mainly occurred up hills and the ambient temp went back down as we descended the hills. Only to go up again as we climbed again. (not big hills - inclines). On this occasion the vehicle did not go into absolute ‘limp mode’ like the other times - but is started to sound more ‘airy’ and not as powerful. We arrived at our destination. I am certain if we had driven further for a short period of time we would have hit limp mode again as per the previous occasions.
Has anyone experienced this? Has got me quite concerned. Dropped the car off at the dealer today.
looking forward to your replies.
Cheers, MGT.

I Haven't seen anything like that on mine, however ours has not done anything like your level of towing.. I am intrigued by the link between the ambient air sensor & it going into limp home mode though. Makes me wonder where the sensor is actually located. Will be following this with interest, and looking forward to an update once the dealer works out whats going on. It sort of sounds like it's being affected by latent heat inside the engine bay, which obviously it shouldnt.
Good luck & hopefully it's a quick fix.

Hi MGT
We had the same problem today driving from Tocumwal to Lancefield with our caravan. No dashboard warning lights, no change in engine temperatures, no change in fuel economy, the Everest just started to feel sluggish. I didn’t notice the outside temperature climb as high as you, 51 degrees was the max I noticed, but that was about 130km earlier. I backed off the speed a little and cruised into the next safe place to stop and had a quick check of the basics with nothing showing out of ordinary. We stoped for an ice cream, and back on the road 10min late and all felt good . 15km further towards Seymour the problem was back, and much more noticeable. I then rang Central Ford Service for some advice and they advised me to call RACV for Ford roadside assistance. RACV man arrived and hooked up his OBDII/EOBD tool and came up with three codes, #7E8:Engine, #7EE, and #7E9:A/T. The RACV man then cleared the fault codes and we decided to try again. This time we made it the last hour home. I will be booking the Everest in for a checkup tomorrow and will let you know what they find. Just a question, what have you done to the front of your Everest, I have a ARB Sahara bar with hoop and two 9inch driving lights. I’m wondering if I have restricted the air flow too much. Or it could be the combination of 45 degrees, caravan and 110km. Cheers. Adrian

Hi MGT & Irvo, I had the same towing problem on the hot day 22 Jan, did not notice the temp rise was showing 46 deg. Our van is 1800 kg so not a high weight. It has been to the dealer & codes checked, all looked ok or was told it was ok. I asked about a trans cooler & they send it would be a help with towing.

Had a similar problem a year or so back towing caravan on a very hot day. Went to the nearest Ford dealer who put the computer on it and determined that the system was responding to a slight overheat issue. A the the time I was new to towing and driving in automatic. Ford in fact recommend that when towing always use the sports shift and never use 6th (overdrive gear). Since then no issues including 9000Km trip just completed towing the same van. Since my incident I have fitted an ARB Sahara bar but no lights or other fixtures.

Hi our Everest a trend 2017. I noticed our ambient temp display go up to 46 degrees. We were towing the day was 33 and it happened on every slight incline but no loss of power probably next time no indication from car. We have ARB bar. We have had electrical/ electronic issues rear door opening after car locked cant be closed with remote, windows opened sometime after car locked & left at shopping centre one time came out and it was raining, adaptive cruiser sensor blocks on every long trip, info touch screen locks up so cannot use. none fixed by Ford as when car turned off it resets everything. We have left car running when taken to Ford Dealer. Nearest dealer over 200kms away. Suspension dropped onto bump stops Ford reluctantly replaced 3 months later back on bump stops Ford didnt want to know we have aftermarket now.

Can I just clarify what you are reporting - it was 33 degrees outside, but the car was reporting 46? - but only when you went up a hill & worked the engine a little harder?

Hi Guys.
We have recently had the limp mode again. After talking to some people I have a few things to look at. Apparently the inside temperature display sensor is linked to the air intake temperature sensor on the turbo, if the computer believes that the temperature of the air going into the turbo is too hot it will go into limp mode. To test this, I have been told, you need to test the resistance of the sensor in normal operation and in limp mode.
I have not tested mine yet, will do in next few weeks.
Maybe the collective knowledge can expand on this information.
Adrian.

i know it sounds simple but as a starting point check intercooler for dirt/bug build up in vents and trans cooler for dirt/mud build up. if intercooler or trans temps rise computer will pull power out

Where is the Ambient temperature sensor located exactly? Can someone post a photo of what it looks like so I can find it?
Thanks!

Hi Guys I wonder if there has been any movements on this? We live in WA and we bought the Everest Trend 3.2 new in 2017. After a few months we went up a hill (not huge) and the vehicle went into limp mode. Ford said - not enough evidence, no codes - nothing wrong.
Skip forward to May this year - We just purchased a little caravan and went away for our first weekend. Limp mode city! Driving on the flat, no issues - but at the merest sniff of a hill we would go into limp mode. No codes - no dash lights. 15 minutes on the side of the road and away we went.
Ford said "how long do you want us to spend looking for this" I said - how about you FIX IT! They replaced some temperature sensor on the exhaust they have had issues with - but their customer service sucks. Cost us $400 for this attempt. I hope it solves the issue but I'm not holding my breath.
We didn't notice any temperature rise but we are taking it out again tomorrow to see if it does it again. Will keep an eye on the ambient gauge to see if it is getting hot. I will also plug in my GOFAR dongle to see if it throws a code.

Hello All
Wondering if anyone has anymore more information to share on the issue of limp mode while towing (1500kg)? After happening to me and losing power at 100km/hr, I had my Everest inspected by Ford and the code presented was to do with the turbo "stuck" error. Not sure if stuck open or closed. They tested the turbo parameters in workshop and all checked out OK, so they put it down to a faulty sensor reading. They updated the ECU software and left it at that. I am not 100% convinced yet, but certainly appreciate Ford's help in trying to resolve.
The ambient sensor does usually read hotter than outside. But this was was reading 34degC when it happened (was about 30-32 Outside). So if the ECU does take information from this sensor and alters motor parameters accordingly, then 34degC would still be quite normal.
1. I'm curious if any other "information displays" were observed during anyone else's experiences?
2. Does anyone know when error codes are stored in the system, if they are tagged with date, time, speed stamps ect....? I am picking up a comment where the Ford technician mentioned he didn't know how long the error code has been present for? Shouldn't he just be able to look and see when it occurred?
3. I did notice some comments in post about overheating transmissions. If anyone has experienced this problem, did it display a "transmission error."
Appreciate any information. Thanks.

Hi,
I have ford ranger which using same platform and I have had same issue when I start climbing. The reason we found was fuel temperature, limp mode kicking in when fuel temp above 85 without any warning light.
