I joined this forum to find out more about the Everest.... as I am looking at buying a 4*4. I need it for visiting remote stations in outback Australia as well for usual outdoor fun (Simpson desert etc). I haven't owned a 4*4 before and usually travel with others in their 4*4. I wonder if you could help me? In my research I see Everest as the main alternative for the Prado. While I am influenced by the 'unbreakable' reputation of Toyota. I think I prefer the Everest as to design and features. But will it 'last' like a Prado? I am looking at either the Everest Trend of a 2017 GXL Prado. Can the forum tell me why I should l buy an Everest and not a Prado?? I know this is a totally biassed forum... but would be really interested/value your opinions. Parting with around $60K is not a small decision for me

Hi Dave, Welcome to the forum. I went through the same considerations and comparison for about six months until I bought an Everest Trend in mid-2016. I opted for the Everest over the Prado and Fortuner for the following reasons: 1. The Everest has a much higher level of embedded driveline and sensor technology than the Prado. This continues to be the case. 2. The Everest is built on a solid foundation of the Ranger which continues to dominate the ute market. Ford Australia has global engineering and product development responsibility for both Ranger and Everest - this augurs well for the Everest platform. 3. Everest superior torque and towing capabilities. 4. The three areas where Prado excelled over both Everest and Fortuner, which may have 'evaporated' with the recent release of the 2018 Prado: * Much larger fuel tank - however, the 2018 Prado only has an 87 litre tank * Integrated rated recovery point - don't know if that 2018 Prado has these. * Both Toyotas have better interior finishes than Everest.
After driving my Everest for almost 40,000km including towing my Ultimate Offroad Trailer through the Outback, I am convinced I made the right choice.

My last truck was a 120 Prado, which I traded for my Trend. Power, economy and price convinced me to buy the Everest. Also, it’s a tough looking piece of kit! Good luck with your choice, mate.

Mike Lovell You may need a little help here. 1. 4wd mode wise the Everest TMS is ok but going through the tech operation specifics the Prado system seems to be a fair bit more advanced ? Please elaborate and we can go through specifics, the Everests " active " clutch assisted centre diff won't lock un less loaded and the trans is sloppy, 2. Ute based vs 4wd SUV. Are we saying a ute based platform beats a specific built SUV platform, have they proven the Prados platform yet. Even if we were comparing to the Fortuna is the Hilux no good ? 3. Correct power and torque figures are better on the Everest it is just a shame the trans is under par, All the engine in the world still needs good delivery 4. The 2018 Prado has 150lts of fuel storage not sure where you got this info of reduced capacity from. Recovery points, the Prado has front and back there not rated but are decent unlike like the everests coat hook 5. Inferior finishes, In comparison to ford I will apologies for you, sorry you have never seen a Toyota. Each to there own and the Everest has its place and is a nice car but all your points far fetched and not very informatiove for people that may consider another manufacturer We were following an Everest down the road form licola last week it was set up for a touring trip and was all over the road struggling to keep it within the road boundaries pitching and squating at every turn, they actually pulled over to let us all pass, we were all on our way to camp and merely coasting behind them

Iceman, You are correct about the Prado's fuel tank capacity (87L main + 63L aux). I picked up my information from a motoring magazine review of the 2018 Prado, which was incorrect. You quite clearly have a strong preference for Toyota over Ford! Good luck. Mike

The reasons I chose the Everest over the Prado was the cost of each model the Everest came with more bells and whistles for the same price Prado, there are are to many Prado’s on the road and I have a 2.7 tonne caravan which the previous model Prado couldn’t tow legally. They are both good cars if I had the money I would of got a 200 series Landcruiser.

They are both good cars if I had the money I would of got a 200 series Landcruiser. The 200 series is great but it depends on your application there also big and heavy this will reduce its off road performance Fair choice if your towing. A word of advise put a tranny cooler on your Everest It will last a lot longer and sometimes reduces the torque converter flare that is a very common issue once at operating temp New prado GXL is not far of the trend $$$ and they also come Std with centre and rear diff locks now and the tow rating has been increased to 3T

If you opt for the Prado with the new tailgate, the spare is mounted under the vehicle and you lose the auxiliary fuel tank. It is a choice new buyers can make.
